We are now on Chapter 2 of Genesis with the story ofAdam and Eve.

Donna Gordon：On a very literal level it's a very nicelittle story.

Donna Gordon： Everything that all of the studentshave said this morning are correct, but on a very literal level.

Donna Gordon：Yes, CJ, on one level it can represent anideal world, or as we say, a Utopia.

I am going to give you two different ways of looking atthis story.

The first story is an interpretation by my youngest son.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：第一个是我的小儿子对这个故事的理解。）
My son is not so little. He is now 29 years old.
（我儿子不是很小，他现在已经29岁了。）
He sees this story as a story about growing up from achild to an adult.

So if we look at this story as a story about growing up,what could the garden represent in this angle?

Donna Gordon：The garden could be seen as childhoodinnocence.

Donna Gordon：Why do I say that the garden can representthe innocence of childhood?
Because think about being a child.
Does a child have a lot of responsibilities like anadult?

Donna Gordon：Yes, Ting, most children are carefree.

Donna Gordon：Babies and young children have all of theirneeds taken care of by the adults in their lives.

Everything in their lives is wondrous.

Donna Gordon：When you take your child to a park for thefirst time and they play, they are full of wonder and excitement when they seesomething for the first time. Yes?

Donna Gordon：All children male and female play togetherand don't really see a difference in each other.

They are all friends, yes?

They all run after each other, talk, and laugh together,yes?

Donna Gordon：So, the garden can be looked at as a utopia,a place of perfection and a place of childhood innocence.

The Tree of knowledge
分别善恶树
Donna Gordon：So, if Adam and Eve want to continue to livein the garden, what must they not do???

Jiangsu海阔天空 14号：不能吃善恶树的果子。
Donna Gordon：If Adam and Eve want to remain in theirchildhood utopia, then they must not eat from a tree.
What is the tree called?

cj 1号：Tree of knowledge of good and evil.知善恶的树。
Donna Gordon：Yes, Cj, they must not eat from the Tree ofknowledge of what is good and evil.

宁波-应奇yingqi：分别之树。
Donna Gordon：Ying Qi, can you expand what you are sayingplease?
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：应奇，你能展开说说你的想法吗？）
宁波-应奇yingqi：最初的美，与好奇，是无分别的，一旦分别，就有比较，高下，美丑，就是道德经里讲，美之为美斯恶。
cj 1号：但是God说，亚当已经吃了知善恶树的果子，要是再吃生命树的果子，就变得和祂一样了。那在God那也是有分别的？
宁波-应奇yingqi：真善美，没有对立面，超越二元，没有纷争。
Donna Gordon：If we look at Chapter 2, verse 17, God saysthat Adam can eat from every tree in the garden, EXCEPT for the Tree ofKnowledge of what is good and evil, because if they do, they will surely die.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：第二章第17句，神说亚当可以吃任何树的果子，除了分别善恶树上的。因为如果他们吃了，就会死。）
Jiangsu海阔天空 14号：然后用各自的标准来衡量事物的好坏了。然而，事物就是事物本没有好坏，只是个人的角度不同，个人维护着内在小我。

Donna Gordon：So what does this tree represent if thegarden represents a utopia of childhood innocence?

Donna Gordon：The Tree can represent adulthood.

Donna Gordon：The harsh world as can be seen by adults.

It represents complete awareness.

Donna Gordon：So God in this story is taking on which rolein this childhood utopia?
（所有上帝在这个故事里呈现的角色就是在这个童年时期的乌托邦。）
宁波-应奇yingqi：则汝今者，识精元明，能生诸缘，缘所遗者。由诸众生，遗此本明，虽终日行，而不自觉，枉入诸趣。
翻译-清辞Ｗei：Donna, can you explain what you mean by complete awareness?
（Donna,能解释下您所说的completeawareness是什么意思吗？）
Donna Gordon：Complete awareness is being aware of whatwill benefit or harm you in this world.
Complete awareness is knowing the potential consequencesof every decision that you make.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：Complete awareness就是说知道在这个世界上什么对你好，或坏。知道每一个决定的可能的后果。)
This particular awareness can also be an awareness thatonly adults have that children do not have.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：这个觉知意识是成人有的，但孩子没有。）
What could I be talking about?
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：我指的是什么呢？）
宁波-应奇yingqi：In a Buddhist name, climbing heart.在佛教有个名称叫，攀缘心。
鸣婷 Ting 15号：我不认为老师讲的觉知是指攀缘心。
Donna Gordon：So after the woman meets the snake, eats thefruit and gives it to the man, what happens?
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：那么，当女人见到了蛇，吃了树上的果子，还把它给了男人吃。然后发生了什么呢？）
What happens right after Adam and Eve eat the fruit?
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：就在亚当和夏娃吃了果子之后，立刻发生了什么？）
风行草间：They realized they were naked.（他们意思到自己是赤裸裸的。）
Donna Gordon：Yes, but what happened before that?
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：在他们意识到自己是裸体的之前发生了什么？）
It says that their eyes were OPENED.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：圣经里说他们的眼睁开了。）

Donna Gordon：Powerful words. What does it mean that theireyes were opened?

Donna Gordon：They realized that they were no longerinnocent children, but adults with adult body parts.

Every person as their bodies grow into adult bodies,begins to become very aware of themselves.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：当每一个人的身体变成成人的身体时，他们就开始很有自我意识了。）
He-荷叶-9：向外了。
Donna Gordon：They are aware that they have suddenly grownup.(他们意识到自己突然长大成人了。)

Donna Gordon：They are no longer children.（他们不再是孩子了。）
宁波-应奇yingqi：对外了，独立了个体，不再不分性别。
Donna Gordon：Boys become men and girls become women almostovernight.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：几乎在一夜之间，男孩变成了男人，女孩变成了女人。）
The snake can represent a couple of different things inthis angle.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：这里的蛇可以代表两种不同的意义。）
The snake can be a representation of the male penis.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：蛇可以是阴茎的象征。）

Donna Gordon：I am sorry to be so forward, but this can bea representation that Adam and his wife Eve had sex.

Donna Gordon：The snake represents sexual temptation andpuberty.

Donna Gordon：After they eat, their eyes are opened, andthey become very self-conscious about their bodies.

Sex is only one part of adult knowledge, yes?

Donna Gordon：Knowledge in this story can mean all ofadulthood and the responsibilities.

Donna Gordon：So, What is God's role in the garden?

On one hand, we want our children to grow up and be ontheir own.
On the other hand don't we all wish our children couldstay little with us?

Donna Gordon：The tree of life is consciousness and Qi thatflows through the universe.

So very quickly, God finds out that his children are nolonger innocent children.

He sees that they have grown up into adults.

As adults, they are now sent off into the world.

They have to work to sustain themselves.

If Eve has children, she has to endure great pain.

The parent can no longer protect their child. They must learn for themselves between rightand wrong.

They must live with the consequences of their actions.
