 Donna Gordon 2016/6/13Monday(星期一)8:05:26PM:
I would like to begin with a couple of pivotal events inthe life of Jacob, Abraham's grandson.

A couple of pivotal events in the life of Jacob

After Jacob gets in trouble with his brother, Esau, overthe birthright deception, he is told to leave for his uncle's house.

In Genesis, Chapter 28, verse 10, Jacob leaves his hometo go to Haran.

Donna GordonFu Feng, yes, there is slavery in theBible.  It was a common thing in theancient world.  Did they have slaves inancient China?

Slavery is not what I want to talk about this morning.

I want to talk about two amazing moments that Jacobencountered in his life.

Jacob leaves home and stops for the night along the wayand has a dream.

He sees a ladder leading from the earth to heaven andangels of God are going up and down this ladder.
God's presence is encountered in this dream at the topof the ladder.

God tells Jacob that the land where he is lying willbelong to him and that he will have many descendants.

And through his descendants, all the people of the earthwill be blessed.

Jacob wakes up and says, "God was in this place, and I did not know it."

This is a very powerful moment in the Bible. In myopinion, one of the most transcendent stories.

Wei:Fu Feng said there seems to be a lot of who gets blessing, who gave birth to whom, etc.Is it for the purpose of knowing who have the right birthright or legal rights?

Donna GordonYes, A lot of it is a genealogy.  It serves as an authority.

Donna GordonYes, legal rights.  It is similar to the concept of Lineage inChinese history.(是的,法定权利。

But let's look at this story in more detail.

Donna GordonWhat could this ladder reaching from earth toheaven be a symbol for?

Can anyone try to answer this question?

Jiangsu
Donna GordonWhat could the earth represent?

What could heaven represent?

Earth can represent the physical or lower senses.

Donna GordonHeaven represents the higher senses.

His spiritual side.

This is the beginning of the enlightenment of Jacob.

Donna GordonHe awakens to the fact that he is a spiritualbeing.

The rungs on the ladder are the different levels of enlightenmentleading to full enlightenment.

Enlightenment, the process of understanding yourspiritual nature and all that it encompasses is a process.

When Jacob says, "God was in this place, and I didnot know it."  It means that fromnow on, he will always see himself as a spiritual being.

So, what meaning can we bring from this story to our ownlives?

Donna GordonWe should try to be connected from our lowersenses to our higher sense every day.

We must always see the truth of our self as anenlightened soul.

How many people in this world are walking around witheyes that see, but are spiritually blind?

Donna GordonGod is not just in one place, God iseverywhere we are.

God is in every place that we are, because God is who weall are.

We are all made in the image of God.

Donna GordonOn a literal level, Fu Feng, people in theBible act like they are controlled by just their lower physical senses.

But then a story comes along like this that changesthis.

When Jacob says "God was in this place and I didnot know it."  On a deeper level, that place is referring to Him, Jacob.

Spiritually blind people don't realize the supremeconsciousness that they possess inside of themselves.

Jacob didn't either.

But when he awoke from his dream, he realized that hewas not alone in the world, but he was connected to everyone else and blessedby God.

What do the students think of this story?

Wei:Fu Feng said her head is all messed up by the stories of who gavebirth to whom. All those stories of lineage. )

Donna GordonYes, I totally understand.  However, I just quickly go over them whenreading . I don't pay attention to those sections of the Bible.

Wei:Fufeng just said it seems that God's blessing is conditional. It hasto be people he likes, or those who meets his requirement.)

Donna GordonYes, it does seem that way on a literalreading of the text.

Donna GordonDoes she think that the concept of lineage inTaoist masters is important to know?  thelineage of Tai Chi masters and Buddhist monks is important?

The nature of God
神性
Donna GordonSo, let's talk a little about the nature ofGod as seen in the Book of Genesis.

Donna GordonWhy is it that not everyone has God'sblessing?  Why do we not get God'sblessing unless we meet God's requirements?

Do we not have to meet certain requirements in ourfamilies in our lives in order to receive certain favors or blessings from ourparents?

Donna GordonLife is full of requirements to get what wewant? Yes?

Donna GordonParental love is a very natural thing, butthere are also requirements that need to be met before we can move on to ourgoals.

I agree with Fu Feng that parental love should always beunconditional no matter what.

But does it seem that way in the Bible with God's love?

As fu Feng has pointed out, it does seem that God's loveis very conditional.

Donna GordonWe have to understand the society in which itwas written.

so, would you say that God has a big ego?

Donna GordonEverything has to be his way or else we getpunished?

Donna GordonIn many places in the Bible God says thatmankind cannot worship other gods because he is a very jealous God.

Yes, God does not come across as a very loving God.  He has many requirements and laws thatmankind must uphold.

He is not, as we say in English, a very touchy feelyGod.  Not very warm and fuzzy.

I think that this is because on a literal level peoplecould not understand the deeper level of consciousness, they needed a strictparent-God to keep them in line and on the right path.

Donna GordonThe story of Joseph in Egypt sets the stage for the Jewish people tothen be ready to leave Egyptin the next book of the Bible, Exodus.

For Homework for Friday, let's read the book of Exodus.
