Donna Gordon 2016/6/20Monday(星期一)PM8:04:41:
I said at the end of our lastclass as a part of the homework, I wanted you to formulate 2 questions aboutGenesis for class this morning.
Does anyone have a questionthey would like to ask?
Questions about circumcise
DonnaGordon:Jessica, very good questions.
As we saw in Genesis, God doesnot give a reason why he wants Abraham and his descendants to be circumcised.
So, we can only guess why Godrequires circumcision for males.
God says that circumcision ofall males is a visible sign of the covenant or agreement that he makes withAbraham.
It does seem to be ratherharsh, do you think?
DonnaGordon:To your second question, if males are to be circumcised, does God not like women also?
DonnaGordon:Women cannot be easily circumcised like men. It is verydangerous.
DonnaGordon:Since women can't be circumcised like men and wereactually viewed as the "property" of their fathers and husbands, theywould be included under the sign of their father or husband's circumcisionmark.
The ancient society in theBible was considered to be a Patriarchal society ruled by men. Most of the commandments and laws were to bedone by the men.
DonnaGordon:Even in today's more traditional Jewish religioustradition, the laws and commandments were to be done by the males.
Women were viewed as property, they were not required to carry out all of God's religious commandment. They were too busy raising children.
Jiangsu
DonnaGordon: Jiangsu, yes, the whole story about Eve being formed from Adam's ribs wasto say that man was dominant over the female.
Of course......... we all knowthat it should be the other way, because all men come out of women!!
Very true, rightladies???
Any other questions aboutGenesis from the Students before we go on to the Book of Exodus?
Ok, if there are no otherquestions about Genesis, let's move on to the Book of Exodus.
About Exodus
DonnaGordon:Did everyone read Exodus?
DonnaGordon:jiangsu, a very goodquestion. Why does the Bible not showhow people can find God in their heart?
The mind set of the people ofthe Middle East where the Bible was writtenwas and is very different from the far Eastern Asian countries.
They were nomads who traveledfrom place to place with their families, animals, and tents.
Their experience of the worldwas very different from yours where people experienced what they called Chi,the life force.
The ancient Hebrews called itGod, and still do.
The Bible on the surface seemsvery harsh, and God seems very harsh also.
But, I still say that when mangoes much deeper into the symbolism of the Bible, they will see that God can befound in the heart.
Donna Gordon :Ok, afterreading Exodus what did you think of Exodus?
At the end of Genesis, whatcountry did Joseph and his brothers live in?
They ended up in Egypt.
At the beginning of Exodus, the descendants of Jacob are living in Egypt.
Joseph, who second to theruler of Egypt, has died and a new ruler has come to power who does not remember Joseph.
The new ruler, called thePharoah, has made the Hebrews to be slaves.
They work to make cities forthe Pharoah.
The word in Hebrew for Egyptis:Meets-ra-yeem.
Mee means from
tsra-yeem means narrowness.
So if we take a symbolic lookat Egypt, we can see thatthe experience of Egyptput the Hebrews into a very oppressive and narrow place.
They were not free to be theirown people they were slaves.
But despite their oppression, the Hebrew slaves became very numerous. Pharoah and his advisors thought that they might outnumber them.
Pharoah ordered every Hebrewmale baby to be murdered in order to control the population numbers.
Moses was born and hidden byhis mother. She then floated him down the river in a basket. The Sister ofPharoah found him and then raised him as her own son.
DonnaGordon:Yes, Jessica, the Pharoah was not a very nice man.(是的,Jessica,法老王不是一个很好的人。)
Moses grew up in the house ofthe Pharoah.
He then kills an Egyptiantaskmaster who was beating a helpless Hebrew slave.
He escapes Egypt and flees to the desert wherehe meets his wife and Father in law. Hebecomes a shepherd of sheep.
DonnaGordon:Yes, Jessica, the Bible has been made into a movie manytimes!
So, now that Moses is in thedesert, he has an encounter with God.
How does Moses experience Godfor the first time?
What does he see that he can'tmake sense of?
He is out watching his flockof sheep when he sees a burning bush.
What is so special about thisburning bush?
It looks like it is on fire, but it is not burning up.
God delivers a message toMoses from the Bush and tells him that he must go back to Egypt and bring the Hebrews out of Egypt and take them to the landof Canaan, which is Israel.
If we look deeper at theBurning Bush, what can it represent?
Ok, what did we encounter atthe beginning of Genesis? What was thefirst thing that God made?
God made light!
What happens to Moses when heencounters the light of the Burning Bush?
DonnaGordon:When Moses encounters God at the Burning bush, Mosesbecomes enlightened.
He is spiritually awakened.
DonnaGordon:Jiangsu, think ofyourself. If you encountered a Divine power like God you would becomeenlightened very quickly!
Jiangsu
DonnaGordon:Similar to Buddha, he leaves his palace, he goes outamong the people, he sees their poverty and their souls and becomesenlightened.
There is a lot of talk aboutthe desert in the Bible.
What is a desert? Anyone know?
DonnaGordon:For me, I now see the desert as a very desolate place, aplace of nothingness. White paper.
DonnaGordon:The desert can be a symbol of the concept of White paperor nothingness.
Moses encounters enlightenmentand God while in a place and state of mind of nothingness.
He is awakened to higherconsciousness.
He is now given a message inhis enlightened state of mind and consciousness to go back to Egypt and freehis people, the Hebrews.
Any questions from thestudents before we end our class for today?
We will talk more aboutenlightenment in the Bible at our next class.
