I said at the end of our lastclass as a part of the homework, I wanted you to formulate 2 questions aboutGenesis for class this morning.
Does anyone have a questionthey would like to ask?

Questions about circumcise

As we saw in Genesis, God doesnot give a reason why he wants Abraham and his descendants to be circumcised.

So, we can only guess why Godrequires circumcision for males.

God says that circumcision ofall males is a visible sign of the covenant or agreement that he makes withAbraham.

DonnaGordon：Women cannot be easily circumcised like men. It is verydangerous.

DonnaGordon：Since women can't be circumcised like men and wereactually viewed as the "property" of their fathers and husbands, theywould be included under the sign of their father or husband's circumcisionmark.

The ancient society in theBible was considered to be a Patriarchal society ruled by men. Most of the commandments and laws were to bedone by the men.

Women were viewed as property,they were not required to carry out all of God's religious commandment. They were too busy raising children.

The mind set of the people ofthe Middle East where the Bible was writtenwas and is very different from the far Eastern Asian countries.

They were nomads who traveledfrom place to place with their families, animals, and tents.

At the end of Genesis, whatcountry did Joseph and his brothers live in?

Joseph, who second to theruler of Egypt,has died and a new ruler has come to power who does not remember Joseph.

The new ruler, called thePharoah, has made the Hebrews to be slaves.

The word in Hebrew for Egyptis：Meets-ra-yeem.

Mee means from
tsra-yeem means narrowness.
（翻译-清辞Ｗei：Mee是“从，来自”的意思。tsra-yeem是“窄，狭小”的意思。）
So if we take a symbolic lookat Egypt, we can see thatthe experience of Egyptput the Hebrews into a very oppressive and narrow place.

They were not free to be theirown people they were slaves.

But despite their oppression,the Hebrew slaves became very numerous. Pharoah and his advisors thought that they might outnumber them.

Pharoah ordered every Hebrewmale baby to be murdered in order to control the population numbers.

Moses was born and hidden byhis mother. She then floated him down the river in a basket.The Sister ofPharoah found him and then raised him as her own son.

So, now that Moses is in thedesert, he has an encounter with God.

He is out watching his flockof sheep when he sees a burning bush.

It looks like it is on fire,but it is not burning up.

God delivers a message toMoses from the Bush and tells him that he must go back to Egypt and bring the Hebrews out of Egypt and take them to the landof Canaan, which is Israel.

If we look deeper at theBurning Bush, what can it represent?

Ok, what did we encounter atthe beginning of Genesis? What was thefirst thing that God made?

What happens to Moses when heencounters the light of the Burning Bush?

DonnaGordon：Similar to Buddha, he leaves his palace, he goes outamong the people, he sees their poverty and their souls and becomesenlightened.

There is a lot of talk aboutthe desert in the Bible.

Moses encounters enlightenmentand God while in a place and state of mind of nothingness.

He is awakened to higherconsciousness.

He is now given a message inhis enlightened state of mind and consciousness to go back to Egypt and freehis people, the Hebrews.
